Adiyy ibn Hatim

When the Islamic conquests expanded under the Prophet(peace be upon him), and Islam began to spread, he started sending ambassadors to different tribes to invite them to Islam.  At times the situation demanded that he send forth an army.  One of these tribes was Tay' where 'Adiyy ibn Hatim-a king who was also the son of a king had sought asylum with the Romans in the lands of Syria, after running away from the battle.  The Muslim army reached the lands of Tay' and defeated them easily, since there was no organised army and no king to lead them.  Still, the Muslims were passionate even in battle,  Their objective was to subdue the plots of Adiyy's people against the Muslims and to display their strenght in front of them.  The Muslims captured some of Adiyy's people, including his sister.  They continued towards Madinah, where they informed the Prophet(pbuh) about Adiyy's plight to Syria.  The Prophet(pbuh) was surprised how could a king run away from his religion and abandon his people?  There seemed to be no way to reach Adiyy, but he couldnt stay in the land of the Romans for long.  He was compelled to return to the land of the Arabs and had no choice but to go to Madinah to meet the Prophet(pbuh) in order to arrange some sort of truce between them.  ( It is said that his sister was the one who went to him in Syria and brought him back to Arabia)
Adiyy has relayed his own story regarding his travel towards Madinah:  ' No man in Arabia had more hatred for the Messenger of Allah than I did.  I was a Christian and was treated as a king among my people.  When i heard about the Messenger of Allah, i began to loathe him.  I journeyed towards Rome, which was ruled by Caesar.  I hated living there, so i said to myself: By Allah, why dont i go to this man(Muhammad)?  If he is a liar, he will not harm me: if he is truthful, i will know it.  I left Rome and headed towards him, When i entered Madinah, people began to say:  That's Adiyy ibn Hatim!  That's Adiyy ibn Hatim!  I continued walking until I entered a mosque and saw the Messenger of Allah(pbuh),  He asked: 'Adiyy ibn Hatim?  I replied:  'Adiyy ibn Hatim.'
The Prophet(pbuh) welcome  him warmly,  cheerful at his arrival despite the fact that 'Adiyy hated Islam and had fought against the Muslims, fled from the battlefied and sough refuge with the Christians.  Despite all that the Prophet(pbuh) met him with a polite smile, took him by his hand and led him into his house.
Walking alongside the Prophet of Allah(pbuh), 'Adiyy began to feel as if they were peers.  The way he saw it, Muhammad(pbuh) was the king of Madinah and its surrounding and Adiyy was the king of Tay' and its surroundings. Muhammad (pbuh) believed in a heavenly religion Islam and Adiyy believed in a heavenly religion Christianity.  Muhammad(pbuh) had a book revealed to him the Qur'an and Adiyy has a book sent down the Gospel of Jesus.  At that moment, Adiyy felt as if there was no difference between the two of them except in terms of the strenght of their armies.
As they were walking, 3 incidents took place:

1.  A woman stopped in the middle of the road, calling out: O Messenger of Allah, i need something! The Prophet(pbuh) pulled his hand away from Adiyy's and went to her, listening to her appeal.  "Adiyy ibn Hatim with his past expeience of kings and ministers began comparing their ways of dealing with people with what he was witnessing now from the Prophet(pbuh)  He thought deeply and said:  These are not the manners of a king: these are manners of a prophet!  When the woman finished what she had to say, the Prophet(pbuh) returned to Adiyy and then continued walking together.

2.  Along the way a man approached Allah's Prophet(pbuh)
The man said: O Messenger of Allah, I complained to you about my poverty and need.
This man could hardly find something which to satisfy his children's hunger; similarly, many Muslims around him were living hand-to-mouth, possessing nothing they could help him with.  The man spoke these words while Adiyy listened. The prophet(pbuh) responded to him with a few words, and they continued walking.

3.  Just as they had gone a bit further, another man approahed and said O Messenger of Allah, I complained to you about the highway bandits.

The Propher(pbuh) responded to him in a few words, and then they continued walking.
"Adiyy began to think the matter over.  He was honoured and dignified among his people; he didnt have enemies lying in wait for him,  Why then should he embrace this religion whose people were weak, needy and poor?

They arrived at the house of The Prophet(pbuh) and entered.  There was only one pillow and the Prophet(pbuh) insisted that Adiyy sit on it, seeking to give him the same level of respect that he was accustommed to.  He said:  Take this and sit.

Adiyy gave it back saying: No you sit on it instead.

The Prophet(pbuh) replied: No, you.
It finally ended with Adiyy so he took his seat upon it.  At that point, the Prophet(pbuh) began removing the impediments between Adiyy and Islam, saying : O Adiyy, become a Muslim and you will be granted security.  He repeated this three times.

Adiyy said: I already follow a religion.

He  responded: i know more about your religion than you do.

Adiyy asked: you know more about my religion than i do?

He replied:  Yes.  Arent you from ar-rukusiyah?
(*Ar-rukusiyah is a form of Christianity blended with a bit of fire worshipping.  It was a sign of his skill of persuasion that he didnt say; "Arent you a Christian? " instead, he went beyond this to a more spesific fact: his particular denomination within Christianity. It is as if you meet someone in a European country who asks you: Why dont you become a Christian?  You responded by saying: I already follow a religion.  Instead of asking you, "Arent you a Muslim? or Arent you a Sunni? this person askes 'Arent you Shafi i? or Arent you a Hanbali?"  At that point you realise that he or she knows about your religion.)

Adiyy responded: Indeed!

He(pbuh): continued:  And upon engaging in battle with a people, you take one-fourth?

He said: Indeed!

The Prophet(pbuh) said: And this is forbidden in your religion.

Adiyy drooped when he heard these words and said yes.

He(pbuh) said: I know what prevent you from embracing Islam.  It is your saying to yourself that only the weak and powerless follow him and the Arabs have disowned them.  O Adiyy, do you know al Hayrah?( a city in Iraq)
He said: I have not seen it; i have only heard of it.
He(pbuh) told him:  By Him in whose hands is my soul, Allah shall not complete this affair until a woman travels from al-Hayrah and circles the Kaaba without guardian accompanying her.

When Adiyy  heard this he began to visualise the scene : a woman travelling from Iraq to Makkah must cross the entire Arabian Peninsula, which entails passing Tay', the place of his people.  Astonished  he said to himself...the rebels of Tay', who reaps havoc in the lands, wont touch her?

The Prophet(pbuh) continued:  And the treasures of Khosrau, son of Hormidzd! His wealth will be spent in the way of Allah.  And if you live long enough, you will witness a man walk out with a handful of gold or silver, in search of someone who will take it from him, and he will find none.

(This meant that a rich man will walk around with his charity and will not find any poor to give to)

Then the Prophet(pbuh began to admonish 'Adiyy: he reminded him about hereafter: And Allah will meet each one of you on the day that He will meet without a translator.  One will look towards his right to find nothing but hellfire, and and look towards his left to find nothing but hellfire.

Adiyy remained silent in reflection.  Then the Prophet(pbuh) surprised him by saying: O Adiyy, what stops you from saying 'Lailla haillaAllah'.  Do you know anything grander than Allah?

Adiyy said: Let it be known then that i am a Muslim.  I testify that none is worthy of worship except Allah and i testify that Muhammd is the Messenger of Allah.

The face of the Prophet (pbuh) overflowed with happiness.

'Adiyy said: And here is a woman who travels from al- Hayrah to the Kaaba without a guardian; I am one of those who conquered the treasures of Khosrau.  By the One in  whose hands is my soul. the third shall also come to pass because the Messenger of Allah has said so."
(Muslim and Ahmad)
